Title: Laguna Cottage Wins Landscaping Makeover from GardenSMART TV Run Date: FOR IMMEDIATE USE Words: 457 Photo: Digital photo attached
Laguna Beach property owners Bob and Carol Schmiederer, and Jim and Dayle Schmiederer, know that it’s smart to watch the GardenSMART gardening and lifestyle program, seen locally on PBS. The Schmiederers are the lucky winners of GardenSMART’s landscape make-over contest, supported by program sponsors Monrovia®, Scott’s®, Subaru, and Wayside Gardens. Professional landscape designer Korina Qu Petrozzi, "The Plant Nerd," will refresh and refurbish their front and back yards. The results will be featured in an upcoming GardenrSMART episode and also on the www.gardensmart.tv website. According to Carol Schmiederer, "Our Laguna Cottage was built in 1923 and spent many years among an orchard field. It is on the ocean side of Pacific Coast Highway in Laguna Beach and is considered an Historical House. We know it has great potential, but honestly, I am at a loss as to what to do." GardemSMART producer Jim McCutcheon, stated, " We were deluged with the response to this year’s contest. We had more emails, letters, and calls than I could count! And may of them were quite touching. We would love to do a hundred make-overs, but that’s just not possible. We felt that the Laguna Cottage was just the right size for us to tackle in a single TV episode, and we were excited about exploring the historical aspects of the property. We are delighted that Korina Qu Petrozzi is available to add her special touch to the project. And we are grateful to our corporate sponsors for their support and in-kind contributions." Wayside Gardens, a GardenSMART sponsor, provided unusual plants, accessories, containers, and garden art featured in the landscape design. Since 1916, Wayside Gardens has been the American gardener’s premier source for the newest, hardest-to-find plants from around the world. Wayside Gardens also prides itself on offering unique items to complement any outdoor living space. (www.waysidegardens.com)
Monrovia®, another long-time sponsor, contributed plants to the prize package, drawing from their repetoire of more than 2,200 varieties of perennials, conifers, woody ornamentals, shrubs, trees, citrus, camellias, rhododendrons, vines, ferns, grasses and topiaries. For 80 years, California-based Monrovia® has focused on growing Distinctively Better® plants. (www.monrovia.com) GardenSMART’s other corporate sponsors also provided general support for the landscaping contest. Those sponsors include Scott’s®, maker of Miracle-Gro, Turf Builder, and numerous other lawn and garden products, and Subaru, the official vehicle for GardenSMART. GardenSMART is a gardening-lifestyle television program produced by The Garden Shows Production Company. The shows are unique, featuring "hands in the dirt" action, always demonstrating the how, when and where of plant selection, maintenance and design. To add interest and a wide range of expert advice, each week we're "out and about" visiting with accomplished horticultural experts, often at fabulous, picturesque resorts or gardens. These TV shows are broadcast around the country on local Public Broadcasting stations (PBS).
