As the fall planting season winds down, the horticulture team at Wayside Gardens is fully focused on spring and the exceptional items to be featured in the Wayside Gardens Spring 2007 catalog. Here is a sampling of some of the new and unusual items you’ll be seeing in that catalog and on www.waysidegardens.com early next year.

Rose Rainbow Knock Out® PPAF. cv. RADcor. By far the most floriferous Knock Out® yet, Rainbow offers hundreds upon hundreds of single 2-inch blooms that open orange from coral-pink buds, then turn all shades of salmon, pink, and golden before maturing to light coral. Arising from spring through fall in most climates, they are followed by bright orange hips for winter. And this vigorous rounded shrub is the most disease-free yet, with complete resistance to blackspot, powdery mildew, and rust. Subtly scented with sweetbriar, no wonder this continuous bloomer received a 2007 AARS Award! Z 4-9; spring through fall; sun; H: 3', W: 3'

Rose Night Owltm PPAF. cv. WEKpurosot. This midnight-purple version of the classic 'Sally Holmes' repeats eagerly over a long season, its 8- to 10-petaled blooms opening quickly, lasting a long time, and refusing to fade even in the strongest summer sun. Exceptionally disease-resistant and wonderfully scented with a spicy clove mixture, this 2007 Carruth introduction is one of the most exciting new climbers in decades. Z 5-9; all summer; sun; H: 10-14'

Rose Strike It RichtmPPAF. cv. WEKbepmey. Winner of a 2007 AARS Award, this luscious Grandiflora sports large clusters of fully double 5-inch blooms in warm shades of golden-apricot with orange and pink tones. Strongly redolent of spices and fruit, these exquisite blooms open from classically elongated buds of rosy-pink on reddish stems up to 2 feet long. The shrub is dense and upright, with dark green leaves and superb disease resistance. This is a Tom Carruth introduction, bred from R. CHRiscinn x R. 'Mellow Yellow.' Z 5-9; late spring-early summer; sun; H: 5-6', W: 5-6'

Echinacea After Midnighttm PPAF. 'Emily Saul.' Brilliant magenta blooms arise profusely on this compact, bushy dwarf plant. Boasting black stems and red-black cones, these marvelously fragrant flowers would be dramatic even without their intense coloring and wide, overlapping petals. Ideal for the front of the Echinacea border, containers, and small-space gardens, as well as for cutting. H: 12", W: 10-12"

Echinacea Summer Skytm PPAF. 'Katie Saul.' The first bicolor Echinacea in the world! Pale orange blooms, fully 5 inches wide, offer a halo of rich rosy-pink around the dark orange central cone. And these flowers keep their color longer than most other Echinaceas, even in punishing summer weather. Their scent is the strongest and sweetest in the family as well! Very long-lasting after cutting, they are this season's "must-have"! H: 30-36", W: 18-24"

Polemonium Yezoense 'Bressingham Purple' PP15367. cv. 'Polbress.' Brilliant purple tones highlight the finely-cut foliage of this Jacob's Ladder in both spring and fall. The dark lavender-blue blooms arise about 7 inches above the foliage on sturdy burgundy stems, lasting for several weeks. A superb three-season perennial with interesting texture as well as intense color. Z 4-9; late spring - early summer; shade; H: 8", W: 11"

Metasequoia Glyptostroboides 'White Tips' The new spring foliage of this magnificent Dawn Redwood is almost pure white, quickly turning grayish-green but keeping its white tips. A commanding presence demanding attention for its historical value as well as its great beauty, this ancient species of deciduous conifer thrives even in heavy, wet soils, does not mind street pollution, and grows very rapidly with little need for pruning. In many climates, the fall foliage acquires a reddish or orange cast, and the bare winter silhouette is always splendid. Present on Earth for at least 100 million years, Metasequoia deserves a place in every discriminating landscape. Excellent en masse as a screen, driveway line, or perimeter planting. Z 4-8; sun; H: 40-50', W: 20'

Campanula 'Pink Octopus' PPAF, PVR. Utterly unique and irresistible, this exotic new Korean cultivar sets long, lantern-shaped buds that burst into pendulous pink "tentacles" over a long season. Attractive to hummingbirds and compact enough for containers as well as the garden, this easy-to-grow Bellflower sports long, elegant pink petals that open wider and wider as they mature. Adaptable to many soil types and unpalatable to deer, 'Pink Octopus' is even moderately drought-resistant. Z 5-9; early to midsummer; sun/part shade; H: 10", W: 18"

Hydrangeas from ColorChoice® Never prune your Hydrangeas again with the super-compact CitylineTM series. Bred in Germany, these H. macrophylla hybrids offer stronger stems, more upright growth, and brilliant, long-lasting color on large flowerheads. Hardy to -15 degrees F, these fine cultivars are suitable for containers as well as the sunny to partly shaded garden.Z 5-9; midsummer - early fall; sun/part shade; H: 12-32", W: 36-48"

Citylinetm 'Berlin'
PP 10912. cv. 'Berlin Rabe.' Offering the strongest growth and largest blooms of the series, 'Berlin' is a showstopper with very long-lasting flowers and glossy, mildew-resistant foliage.

CitylineTM 'Paris'
PP 10906. cv. 'Paris Rapa.' Intense dark red blooms, turning to green with maturity. Excellent mildew resistance.

Coreopsis Grandiflora 'Jethro Tull' PPAF. A natural cross of C. 'Zamfir' and C. 'Early Sunrise,' this very floriferous new Coreopsis combines the best merits of both. The blooms have a rich, nonfading golden-yellow color and are more reliably fluted than 'Zamfir,' with elegantly pointed tips. Compact and low-growing, this butterfly magnet is unpalatable to deer, and flowers continuously for many, many months. Z 4-9; mid-spring through late summer; sun; H: 15-18", W: 18"

Lilium 'Blackbird' Cheery upturned deep red blooms, 3 to 6 inches across and held wide open to reveal tiny black speckles near the base of each petal, top the deep green foliage on this dependable Asiatic Lily. One of the best for cutting or containers, it also grows readily in the garden, hardy to -30 degrees F and never needing to be staked. Z 4-9; late spring - early summer; sun; H: 24-36", W: 9-12"
