At last, Corn MiraiTM seed is available to the home gardener—and Park Seed Company has it. Stephanie Turner, Park’s Director of Horticulture for Seed Product, announced that the company has succeeded in obtaining a stock of seeds for this new corn variety that has taken the world by storm. According to Turner, "This delicious new corn features an exceptionally high sugar content and tenderness. And because it was originally bred for disease resistance, it stands up to problems like Stewart’s Wilt and Common Rust." Corn MiraiTM seeds are available now at www.parkseed.com. Mirai™ was developed on a small farm in Illinois where growers were trying to create a new, more disease-resistant variety of sweet corn. In one of those rare happy accidents, the Illinois wizards discovered that their new, heartier plant also yielded corn with flavor superior to any they’d ever sampled. Because the plant must be harvested by hand, none of the big American corn manufacturers were interested. So the growers took their miracle plant to Japan, where most corn is still grown on small farms and picked manually. In no time, Mirai™ had captured an astonishing 35% of the total Japanese corn market! Technically, Mirai™ is classified as a "supersweet," although that label barely does it justice. Mirai™ thrives when planted in warm soil, and then given full sun and plenty of water during the growing season. It’s available as a solid yellow or bicolor ear. The mature ear is about 8 inches long, boasting 16 to 18 rows of kernels, good husk coverage, and great tip fill (i.e., kernels cover the ear all the way to the tip). The word mirai is Japanese for both taste and the future is coming. Clearly, it’s an appropriate name for this phenomenal new product.
