Green Blooms

St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated elaborately throughout the country: green beer, green clothing, green "Kiss Me I’m Irish" pins, green painted faces, and green food. Parades and parties allow everyone to show Irish spirit. We have found another way to show the love of the Irish – green blooming flowers. Park Seed and Wayside Gardens offer 14 different flowers with green petals. Not only do green-blooming flowers support the Irish, they add flare to gardens and are sure to turn heads and spark conversations.

Ideas

Green blooms available (PS=Park Seed item, WG=Wayside Gardens item):

  • Amaranthus Towers Green (PS #2501)–Towers Green is a sun-loving annual that grows a tall central spike and shorter surrounding ones. Unique plant habit and unusual flower color make this plant a showstopper.

  • Aster Hulk (PS #0223)–Unique green and yellow petal–less blooms! Two-inch yellow center is really the entire flower, surrounded by 3 more inches of green bracts that look like curled petals.

  • Bells-of-Ireland (PS #0325)–Sturdy spikes crammed with wide-open green calyces shaped like bells. Great addition to dried arrangements.

  • Clematis ‘Peppermint’ (PS #40045)–A white-flowered variety blooming in mid- to late summer and again in autumn. As the flowers mature, they expand, and eventually the large outer petals drop away, leaving a cheery pom-pom bloom. In autumn, the blooms open lime-green rather than white, each distinctively striped.

  • Coneflower Green Wizard (PS #1785)–Looking like a plucked daisy, this Rudbeckia sports long, thin green sepals and a giant black cone (the size and shape of a large strawberry). Wonderful for getting attention the garden.

  • German Bearded Iris ‘Pride of Ireland’–(WG #43747) Buds are dark green, open blooms chartreuse to light lime. Light yellow falls, awash with pale green, sport darker green undersides that show brilliantly in bud.

  • Hydrangea ‘Limelight’ (PS #47991)–This Hydrangea opens green and then progresses through 4 different colors. And when the flowers finally stop arriving in fall, the foliage leaps into the limelight by turning bright red. A great plant for your garden any time of year.

  • Narcissus ‘Pistachio’ (PS #8899)–One of the most unusually colored Daffodils, with sherbet-green, 4-inch perianths surrounding frilled, glowing yellow trumpets.

  • Peony ‘Green Halo’ (WG #49101)–Flowers measure about 5 inches across, opening from big, fat buds to reveal apple-green petals – long, slender, and slightly curled. Then, in the center of the still-unfurling bloom, you begin to see little tufts of white, and the inner petals are revealed to be a creamy hue.

  • Paeonia ‘Green Lotus’ (WG #44593)–Of exotic Oriental form; elongated, slightly rolled petals with ruffly tips, and stupendous color; with green petals and red stripes, it looks like something that arose under a grow-lamp, rather than your garden.

  • Tulip ‘Night Rider’ (WG #7183)–Night Rider combines dark violet-purple tones with a wide, bright green feather on every petal.

  • Tulip ‘Spring Green’ (WG #7181)–The petals are ivory-white, overlaid with pale yellow accents and a delicate celery-green feathering. Very showy and unusual.

  • ‘White Parrot’ Tulip (PS #8298)–Each ivory, 8- to 10- inch wide, bloom is streaked with green, for a fresh, clean effect that accentuates just about any other garden color.

  • Zinnia Envy (PS #2197)–This magnificent lime-toned Zinnia is as easy to grow as its common-colored cousins, and even prefers a bit of shade for a deeper green hue. This unique green will reach its deepest lime-y tone if given partial shade, particularly in climates where summers are hot.
