Fall Container Gardening Container plants offer gardeners a great way to save space in the yard. They also provide wonderful decoration for a sunny porch or deck. Ideal for first-time gardeners, container plants can be mixed together in larger pots to create mini-gardens. This fall, Park Seed is offering four new dwarf Peruvian Lilies that can bloom for up to four months. At a time when other flowers are loosing their blooms, these beauties offer vibrant color for the fall garden. Ideas Park Seed’s Container Classics: (2008 Fall Catalog Pages 22-23) Princess Liliesâ -Absolutely the top container plants of the season, these miniature Peruvian Lilies cover themselves with blooms for over two long seasons. Best in dappled sun in most climates, they need no special care to flower continuously for 4 months or more. - Princess Fabiana (Item #41861)
-A narrow band of white edges each dark green leaf, complimenting the white blooms that are striped and streaked with soft yellow
- Princess Paola (Item #41864)
-Rosy-pink stripes decorate the center of each white petal, finished with a cluster of streaked red and yellow in the center
Dwarf Oriental Lily Garden Party (Item #8057) -A dwarf selection perfect for containers as well as the front of the Lily display, this ultra-fragrant variety sets clean white blooms with red freckles and a narrow central band that shades from gold at the base to maroon at the tip. Hardy Japanese Banana (Item #46553) -Now northern gardeners can grow a Banana tree without fear of harsh winter weather. Very showy and easy to grow, it asks only for protection from strong wind and wet, boggy soils. Fruit is not edible. Gaura Bijou Butterflies (Item #49371) -The new growth is a beautiful bright rose that matures to green with pink and white edges; when the bright pink blooms come in summer, they combine with foliage to create a truly memorable sight in your garden. If you cut them back after the first full bloom, you’ll have a repeat performance in fall. Stokes’s Aster Purple Pixie (Item #46371) -The full-sized flowers appear heavily in early summer, then repeat at season’s end, on neat little plants that never get rangy or open-centered. Perfect for hot humid climates where other perennials suffer. Hollyhock Queeny Purple (Item #44314) -This plant, unlike the old form of Hollyhock, gives you huge flowers on plants so compact and dense you can use them as a hedge. Rich purple blooms come early and stay late. Dwarf Mallow Barnsley Baby (Item #46793) -Merry 3-inch blooms starred with rosy eyes arise for several weeks on this first-ever dwarf Tree Mallow. This little powerhouse covers itself in blooms from midsummer through fall. Phlox Grenadine Dream (Item #40333) -Each bloom is studded with brilliant ruby-red flowers, held straight up on strong, vigorous plants. Very mildew-resistant, this is the best red phlox we’ve ever seen.
